In the unfortunate event a tooth needs to be extracted, you are in good hands . When a tooth is severely damaged, or it is trapped within the jaw bone beneath the gums, a tooth extraction may be required. Generally a local anesthetic is used to numb the area surrounding the tooth. At Green Family Dental we offer oral sedation to minimize anxiety and pain.
Once the tooth is removed there may be further considerations for treatment. If the extracted tooth was a primary tooth (baby tooth), then a permanent or adult tooth will grow in and fill in the open space. If the extracted tooth was a wisdom tooth it does not require replacing.
However, if the extracted tooth was a permanent tooth, a dental implant or bridge may be necessary to fill in the open space. In the case that multiple teeth need to be extracted, a partial or complete denture can be made to keep your bite and smile in place.
Dr. Greenhalgh has extensive experience extracting teeth, and can do it with as little trauma to the surrounding area as needed while attempting to preserve as much of the natural bone and structure as possible. In this way we leave you as many options as possible when it comes to replacing the missing tooth with an implant while minimizing additional procedures and cost.
At Green Family Dental in El Paso, we can treat problems related to your third molars, more commonly called wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to develop and usually appear in the late teens or early 20s. They often lack the proper space in the jaw to erupt fully or even at all. When there is not enough space for a wisdom tooth to erupt, this common condition is called impaction. Impacted wisdom teeth can be extremely painful and if left untreated, can cause damage to neighboring teeth.
There are several types of impaction:
In certain cases, the wisdom tooth that cannot come through becomes inflamed under the gums and in the jawbone, causing a sac to develop around the root of the tooth that then fills with liquid. This can cause a cyst or an abscess if it becomes infected. If either of these situations goes untreated, serious damage to the underlying bone and surrounding teeth and tissues can result.
Wisdom tooth extraction would be necessary in this case to prevent any serious damage.
We can perform most wisdom teeth extractions, for your comfort during the procedure, with oral sedation. Call our dental office in El Paso if you have any questions.
